Good news for the students and teachers of Sibiu County: the guided hikes from the “Years of Hiking” Programme will be resumed. The teaching staff is invited to sign up for outdoor classes, where students have the chance to draw close to the environment and to acquire valuable skills related to the fauna, flora, history, and culture of the area.
Adventure with the classmates is a project created at the start of this year through a partnership between Sibiu County Council, Sibiu County Tourism Association, and Sibiu County School Inspectorate, as part of the “Years of Hiking” Programme. Its aim is to promote care and respect for nature among the youth, through recreational and fun activities. Each hike is guided, and the route and the activities are created according to the age group and the physical abilities of the students in each class.
Registrations are possible by booking on the Years of Hiking website, under the Hiking section. As a first step, select one of the available dates. After completing the booking, the hike will be customized (route, starting point, difficulty, length, point of arrival) depending on the children’s age, their place of origin, as well as other individual preferences. In the first half of the year, 22 guided hikes were organized, with approximately 500 students and teaching staff from the entire Sibiu county, from both the urban and the rural area.
“The success recorded in the first part of the year motivates us to continue organizing hikes for young pupils and high school students. The show of nature, the comradery of hiking, as well as outdoor exercise are sufficient grounds to work up and to maintain young people’s appetite for the events created especially for them as part of the “Years of Hiking” Programme”, says Daniela Cîmpean, President of Sibiu County Council.
Worth noting is the fact that, based on this partnership, the teaching staff don’t need to get the County School Inspectorate’s prior approval for activities outside the school premises, and only the parent’s prior consent is needed (template provided by the Years of Hiking team).
The teaching staff have to consider the minimum gear which students need to have (hiking boots, adequate clothing, including raincoat) and a pack including a sandwich, snacks and water/tea, as well as being physically fit for the hike.
The “Years of Hiking” programme is initiated and funded by Sibiu County Council, in collaboration with the Sibiu County Tourism Association.
The main aim is to improve the hiking infrastructure in the county and to promote specific ecotourism activities. So far, they have restored all hiking routes from the Cindrel Massif (21 routes, a total of 213 km) and, in parallel, action was taken on route segments from the Făgăraș Mountains, approximately 60 km. In the coming period, route development works are continued in the Făgăraș Massif (23 routes), approximately 200 km.
