Dear hikers,
The route we will follow starts in Păltiniș, from where we will climb the турист trail marked with a red cross toward Poiana Găujoara, the gateway into the “Frumoasa” protected area. After about an hour, we will take a short break in Poiana Găujoara. From here we will follow the red-cross trail sign that climbs toward the sheepfold in Poiana Găujoara and then loops around the Bătrâna Peak. We reach the Bătrâna Saddle, where we will stop for rehydration, an energy boost, and the first stories about the European-interest protected area, the Natura 2000 site “Frumoasa”. We admire the panorama of the Cindrel and Lotru Mountains, part of this protected area, and head uphill toward the rocks on Bătrâna Peak. We follow the snowy path through patches of dwarf pine and juniper and emerge into the alpine zone that leads us to Bătrâna Peak (1911 m). Here we admire mountain landscapes stretching far away toward Cindrel Peak and Șteflești Peak in the Lotru Mountains. It is the ideal place for photos and more information about the Frumoasa protected area. From here we descend on the турист trail back toward Poiana Găujoara. From here we will follow a different path than the one we came on, which leads us onto the forest road descending toward the Muncel ranger station. Here Alex will be waiting for us—he will have been preparing a cauldron of goulash since morning—along with a glass of hot tea and stories about mountain safety rules (Alex is an employee of Salvamont Sibiu). After we enjoy Alex’s delicious goulash, we will continue through the forest toward Poiana Lupilor, heading to the terminal chairlift station on the Oncești ski slope. In about an hour we will be back in Păltiniș.
The hike is suitable for people of any age with a minimum level of physical fitness, and for children aged 8 and up.
Because there is a consistent layer of snow in the mountains, please make sure you are properly equipped for winter conditions!
