Dear hikers,
On Friday, January 2nd, we set off with early-year enthusiasm on a new adventure into the rich nature of the Făgăraș Mountains. During our hike we will pass through two special protected areas: the first located at the foothills of the Făgăraș Mountains and the second in the alpine area of the mountain massif. The first protected area, called the Făgăraș Piedmont, is dedicated to protecting mountain bird species that are rare within the European Union. The second one, called the Făgăraș Mountains, is designated to protect the biodiversity of this area, including alpine meadows, large carnivores, mountain-water fish, as well as various insect species. Along the route, the guide will provide detailed information about these two extremely valuable protected areas in the Făgăraș Mountains.
As we have to cover an elevation gain of approximately 500 meters, we will meet early in the morning, at 7:30, in the parking lot of the Hervis store at Șelimbăr Mall. After a short presentation of the day’s program, we will group into cars and head towards the Avrig Valley. We enter a secondary valley where a fairly good 8-kilometer forest road leads us to the start of our route. After parking the cars at the end of this forest road, we will set off on foot along the trail marked with a red triangle, which climbs quickly through the beech forest towards the main ridge leading to Suru Hut. The ascent is quite sustained, helping us burn off the calories generously accumulated during the winter holidays. After joining the main trail that starts from the village of Sebeșu de Sus, we will continue for about two more hours through mixed beech and spruce forest until we reach our destination, Suru Hut. Here we will stop for a hot tea and a tasty soup prepared by the welcoming hut hosts. Those in better physical shape may continue together with the guide for about one more hour towards the Salvamont Monument, from where we will enjoy an extraordinary panorama towards Suru Peak.
We will return to Suru Hut, reunite with the rest of the group, and head downhill along the same route we followed in the morning. We will reach the cars before nightfall, closing our circuit tired but full of memorable experiences. We then head home to rest after a day full of movement, fresh air, and majestic landscapes seen from the high areas of the Făgăraș Mountains.
