Dear hikers,
The hike I will guide on Sunday, 21.09.2025, will be very easy. We will walk only along the Olt River to observe waterbirds (and not only) that have nested in the reservoirs on the Olt and are now preparing to head south in their autumn migration. Our hike will take place in the protected area dedicated to the conservation of waterbirds, called the Natura 2000 site Avrig – Scorei – Făgăraș. The chosen destination for our hike is the Olt River reservoirs at Bradu and Săcădate.
We will meet in the morning at 09:00 in the parking lot of Șelimbăr Mall, in front of the Hervis store. After a short presentation of the day’s program, we will drive to the village of Bradu, where we will regroup to follow the path along the dam of the Olt River at this location.
We will start walking along the dam that follows the Olt River downstream. We will observe common waterbirds (mallards, coots, cormorants), farmland birds (lapwings, linnets, goldfinches), raptors (white-tailed eagle, marsh harrier, kestrel), as well as some rare bird species that will winter in this area (such as mergansers, divers, shelducks), both with the naked eye and with binoculars and a spotting scope.
Here we will also talk about two other protected areas visible from this spot: the Natura 2000 site Făgăraș Piedmont (for the protection of forest bird species) and the Natura 2000 site Făgăraș Mountains, for the conservation of forest habitats, mountain pastures, and many animal species, including large carnivores.
After about 2 hours, we will head to the Săcădate dam, where we will observe and discuss the wild waterbirds that have nested in the reservoirs around Sibiu. The guide will share with the participants curiosities from the bird world, both about those wintering in our country and those arriving on the Olt River lakes to spend the winter in this area.
