Dear hikers,
On Saturday, December 13, we will once again set off with both little ones and grown-ups on a new adventure in the rich natural landscape at the foothills of the Cindrel Mountains. Along our way, we will pass by Piatra Broaștei (“The Frog Rock”), a natural geological reserve protected by law, formed of Cretaceous limestone over 65 million years old. Its current shape, which resembles a frog, was sculpted over time by water erosion. This rock is nationally known for its remarkable variety of marine fossils, which hold unique value as part of national heritage.
The gentle, easy path—with no major elevation changes—will lead us through the gorge of the river that gives the valley its name, flanked by steep slopes covered in ancient beech forests. At one point, we will turn right onto a narrow valley and begin a short but steep ascent that brings us to hidden limestone cliffs nestled in a pine forest. These Cretaceous formations, from the same geological period as Piatra Broaștei and unique in Sibiu county, have been equipped with a few climbing routes.
We will stop above these legendary rocks, where a beautiful viewpoint opens toward Măgura Peak. Here, the guide will offer a sweet surprise to all participants. After a short break, we continue through the pine forest, soon emerging into a meadow above the village of Rășinari. We follow country roads through pastures and meadows until reaching a saddle, where we re-enter the forest and descend through the beech woods toward the forest road in the Argintului Valley. Thus, we complete our circuit and return to the cars. We then head home to rest after a day filled with movement, fresh air, and majestic scenery viewed from story-like cliffs.
WHERE AND WHEN DO WE MEET?
We meet in the morning at 9:30 in the parking lot of Jacobs Restaurant at the Sibiu Zoo.
After a short introduction to the day’s plan, we will group into cars and head toward Cisnădioara. We drive into the Argintului Valley, park in a clearing, and begin our hike along the forest road following the river upstream.
