Dear hikers,
On April 27th, we’ll set off—both kids and adults—on a new adventure to observe the colorful bee-eaters that nest in the earthen banks of the Gușterița hill. We will meet in the morning at 9:30 AM in front of the Evangelical Church in the Gușterița neighborhood. After a brief introduction to the day’s program, we will begin our hike.
We’ll walk along the country road leading us to the old farm on the Gușterița hill. Our first stop will be right there, where, with the help of binoculars and a spotting scope, we will observe the bee-eaters that have returned to their old nests after traveling thousands of kilometers from Africa to lay their eggs in the clay wall behind the farm.
We’ll continue through the widening pasture, where we’ll be able to spot various bird species feeding on the spring-awakened insects. Before entering the forest, we’ll have the chance to admire the view toward the Lotru Mountains to the southwest. In the mixed forest of oak, hornbeam, and linden, we’ll enjoy the songs of woodland birds searching for mates as nesting season begins.
We’ll exit the forest above the village of Hamba, where we’ll take a short lunch break. After a few nature discovery games and stories with the little ones (which adults are also invited to join), we’ll head back into the woods. About half an hour later, we’ll emerge into a wide meadow with panoramic views of the Cindrel and Lotru mountains. From there, a long descent will take us back to the old farm, and following the same country road we took in the morning, we’ll return to the Evangelical Church in Gușterița, where our hike ends.
This is an easy hike, suitable for people of all ages, including children aged 6 and up!
No special technical mountain gear is required for this hike!
